Freeing VUCA for the Digital Age: A Discussion Based on the Civilization Theory of Norbert Elias

The starting point of the article is the classification of our world as a so-called VUCA world. The individual terms volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity will be examined regarding their etymological origins and dialectical potential. Based on sociologist Norbert Elias’ theory of civilization, it will be shown to what extent “our” world has always been VUCA—and, on the other hand, which specific form of VUCA characterizes our culture and sets it apart from other cultures. With the help of this analysis of differences, the aim is to sharpen the focus on obstacles in the course of an overarching social transformation, which Norbert Elias aptly describes as the challenges of “integration of humanity.” The aim is not only to free VUCA from its latent negative connotation but also to go beyond its use as a diagnostic tool and explore the potential of the four terms for social development in the course of globalization and digitalization.
