Cichorium intybus L.

Cichorium intybus (chicory) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the family Asteraceae. In traditional Indian medicinal practices like Ayurveda and Unani, different parts of C. intybus have been utilized for centuries due to their therapeutic properties. This chapter highlights the various pharmacological and medicinal properties of C. intybus. It covers the botanical characteristics of plants, including classification and morphology. Furthermore, a thorough study of its phytochemical composition reveals a variety of bioactive compounds such as sesquiterpene lactones, phenols, flavonoids, polysaccharides, and alkaloids. C. intybus is used in Indian folk medicine and it also possesses a wide range of pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties. These effects are related to the plant’s rich phytochemical diversity and therapeutic potential in treating a variety of diseases including diabetes, liver disease, gastrointestinal disease, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. The traditional uses of C. intybus in different cultures and its modern pharmacological uses are discussed. In conclusion: C. intybus is a source of promising herbal preparations with multiple pharmacological effects and therapeutic potential. Even so, further studies are needed to reveal its mechanism of action, optimize dosing strategies, and evaluate its clinical effectiveness against various diseases.
