Macrotyloma uniflorum (Lam.) Verdc.

Macrotyloma uniflorum or “Horse gram” is a legume that is native to tropical southern Asia. It is also referred to as “kulthi bean”, “hurali”, or “Madras gram” and is utilized in a variety of cuisines due to the unique flavor and texture of its pods/seeds. The name refers to the fact that it is frequently used as horse feed. The plant species has been introduced to the West Indies and is grown in many parts of India, Nepal, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. The seeds can be eaten ground, whole, or sprouted. As a super food, it is widely consumed throughout India and is used by many Hindus as a nutritious supplement to the “sattvic” (vegetarian) diet.
