Turmeric, or Curcuma longa L., has been used since time immemorial for its medicinal properties. This vivid yellow coloured spice is rich in bioactive ingredients, as curcumin and curcuminoids that contribute to its many health advantages. The present chapter investigates the diverse medicinal characteristics of Curcuma longa, encompassing its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, anticancer, hepatoprotective, anti-diarrhoeal, immunomodulatory and various other beneficial effects. The mechanisms underlying these effects are also explored, with emphasis on the molecular pathways that the phytoconstituents affect. The chapter seeks to provide an exhaustive understanding of the health advantages of Curcuma longa by integrating the results of recent research alongside its incorporation into contemporary medical practices. The manuscript examines the significance of turmeric’s broad pharmacological activity and its application in the pharmaceutical sector to the development of innovative medications for the treatment of many illnesses.
