This chapter brings us “back to the roots” of international business (IB) theorisation, by underscoring the influence of the Reading School in the development of mainstream IB theory. Several examples using the words of influential scholars are provided, highlighting the importance of the Reading School and its influence on the development of IB as a unique and standalone field. Subsequently, the authors adopt an IB microfoundational lens to explain why future IB research can place more attention to the role of micro-actors for explaining why multinational enterprises (MNEs) behave the way they do. They stress that shifting IB scholarly attention from the macro- to the micro-level is a key path for extending and advancing what the Reading School has offered us, and prolong the influence of IB research not only for advancing IB theory but also for informing other disciplines.
