Competition and comparison are inseparable part of human life. While many people believe that they do not care about other’s judgments and opinions, they do so in reality and much of the motivation, energy, evaluations of the self and performance comes from the competitions with others and the comparisons that people make with others. The domain of learning a second language might not be an exception to this, and students might compare their performance and language ability with those of their classmates, friends, family members, role models, or teachers to provide an evaluation of their language ability for themselves.

Competition and comparison are inseparable part of human life. While many people believe that they do not care about other’s judgments and opinions, they do so in reality and much of the motivation, energy, evaluations of the self and performance comes from the competitions with others and the comparisons that people make with others.
