Loose Bodies

Arthroscopic removal of loose bodies around the elbow has been established for many years due to its minimally invasive character and the ability to reach any joint compartment. The main causes for loose bodies are osteoarthritis and osteochondrosis dissecans. Therefore, further actions (i.e., osteocapsular arthroplasty and microfracturing) are often necessary during the operation. Besides X-rays of the affected elbow, cross-sectional imaging is necessary to detect and localize loose bodies and their possible origin and cause. Nonossified loose bodies might not be detected or overlooked. During surgery, all compartments of the joint must be inspected and the loose bodies should be removed. Main complications include nerve lesions and the recurrence of loose bodies. Free range of motion with only low restriction is permitted after loose body removal. Still, further procedures due to other underlying pathologies might limit the aftercare.
