Introduction to International Drug Policy

This chapter provides students with an introduction to the study of International Drug Policy. It outlines the parameters of the subdiscipline, and it provides learners with a working definition of the term ‘International Drug Policy.’ In turn, students receive a basic overview of what ‘drugs’ are, what ‘policies’ are considered to be, and what it is meant by when people say that the study of drug policy is ‘international’. The chapter then discusses some of the benefits of studying drug policy internationally, and students are introduced to the area of ‘comparative drug policy analysis’. Next, students are familiarized with several different approaches to the study of International Dug Policy. In the final part of the chapter, consideration is given to how the academic study of International Drug Policy can be situated within the larger field of International Criminal Justice Sciences. It then concludes with an overview of the remaining chapters that follow in the book.
