Science and Cultural Diversity in Latin American Countries

Juan José Saldaña González played an important role in fostering the studies on the history of science and cultural diversity by leading the creation of the International Association for Science Cultural Diversity (IASCUD) in the early twenty-first century in Mexico City. Since then, the relevance of studies on the relation among science and culture and cultural diversity and the approach in terms of cultural history and history of knowledge has been increasing. They are instrumental for the future development of history of science and technology as a scholarly field. This has been particularly important in Latin America, where there is at least a confluence of three distinct cultural trends: the European conquerors, the native people who lived here since immemorial times, and the African people who were enslaved and brought to America. In addition, later, there were waves of migrations from other European and Asian countries. In addition, the current development of science requires interaction among scientists and the knowledge of traditional communities.
