Katalin Karikó

Katalin Karikó, inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2023, is a Hungarian-American biochemist. Her career exemplifies the transformative impact of perseverance and innovative thinking in science. Born in Szolnok, Hungary, Karikó’s early fascination with biology led her to groundbreaking research on messenger RNA (mRNA). Despite facing substantial professional setbacks, including funding shortages and skepticism from the scientific community regarding the viability of her approach, her unrelenting dedication culminated in a pivotal collaboration with Dr. Drew Weissman. Together, they developed a modified mRNA technology crucial in rapidly creating COVID-19 vaccines. Their discovery, which involves incorporating pseudouridine to prevent the immune system from attacking synthetic mRNA, enabled the swift production of effective vaccines, significantly mitigating the pandemic’s impact and saving millions of lives. Drs. Karikó and Weissman’s contributions earned them the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
