Chieko Asakawa

Dr. Chieko Asakawa, inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2019, has profoundly impacted the field of accessible technology through her pioneering work. After losing her vision as a teenager, Dr. Asakawa dedicated her career to enhancing accessibility for individuals with disabilities. Her notable contributions include the development of the Home Page Reader, a revolutionary browser designed for visually impaired users that utilized HTML code to facilitate web navigation. At IBM, she also spearheaded innovations such as the aDesigner and aiBrowser, which improved web accessibility and multimedia navigation. Dr. Asakawa’s recent advancements extend to mobile navigation aids, such as the NavCog app, which provides detailed turn-by-turn directions using Bluetooth Low Energy beacons, and the AI Suitcase, which integrates navigation and collision-avoidance technologies.
