Radia Perlman

Radia Perlman, a computer engineer inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2026, is renowned for her groundbreaking contributions to network technology. Despite an aversion to technology, Dr. Perlman has revolutionized the field by pursuing simplicity in solving complex problems. Her most celebrated invention, the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), introduced in 1985, addressed the critical issue of data loops in network communications, facilitating the reliable and scalable expansion of Ethernet systems. Perlman’s STP and subsequent innovations, such as the Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links (TRILL), have been fundamental in the growth and stability of the Internet. Dr. Perlman is also known for her earlier pioneering work with MIT’s LOGO group, which led to the development of the Toddlers Own Recursive Turtle Interpreter System (TORTIS), a novel approach to early childhood programming education using tangible user interfaces.
