Frances Ligler

Frances Ligler, inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2017, has made groundbreaking contributions to biosensor technology, developing optical biosensors that detect and monitor a wide range of harmful substances, from environmental toxins and food contaminants to biological weapons. Initially deployed during the Gulf War in 1991 to safeguard soldiers from chemical and biological threats, Dr. Ligler’s optical biosensors have since been applied across diverse sectors, including healthcare, environmental monitoring, and agriculture. Her innovation involved creating portable, automated devices that utilize biomolecules to enable real-time detection of dangerous agents, revolutionizing safety protocols and diagnostic capabilities. Her more recent work in microfluidics and tissue-on-a-chip technology has reduced the need for human and animal subjects in researching tissue and organ function.
