Ruth Rogan Benerito

Ruth Rogan Benerito, inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2008, renowned as the “Queen of Cotton,” revolutionized the textile industry with her pioneering work in wrinkle-resistant cotton. Dr. Benerito’s unexpected journey from a student passionate about mathematics to a leading chemist was marked by perseverance and innovation. Her research at the USDA’s Southern Regional Research Center (SRRC) addressed the challenge of cotton’s susceptibility to wrinkling, which threatened its market share against synthetic fibers like polyester. By developing a cross-linking technology that strengthened the bonds within cotton fibers, Benerito created wrinkle-resistant and comfortable fabrics, thereby preserving cotton’s popularity. Her contributions extended beyond wrinkle resistance; her cross-linking technique was used for making cotton flame-retardant and stain-resistant, and her work even influenced medical applications such as chronic wound dressings.
