Marion Donovan

Marion Donovan, inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2015, focused on making everyday domestic challenges easier and is best known for her invention of the waterproof diaper cover, a precursor to the modern disposable diaper. As a mother, Donovan was frustrated by the problems associated with cloth diapers in the 1940s and set out to create an alternative. Her invention, the Boater, used waterproof materials and snaps to improve diapering, significantly reducing leaks and diaper rash and simplifying the changing process. Despite initial resistance from manufacturers, Donovan successfully marketed the Boater through Saks Fifth Avenue, achieving commercial success and later selling her business for $1 million. Although her attempts to develop a fully disposable diaper were not realized, her ideas influenced future innovations in the area. Donovan’s career extended beyond diapers; she earned a degree in architecture from Yale University and continued to invent throughout her life, including developing the DentaLoop dental floss, a zipper pull, and many other devices designed to address some of life’s nuisances.
