In the stories of most urban subcultures in the twentieth century, independently produced magazines are an important chapter. In Los Angeles in the late 1970s, there were short-lived publications like Lobotomy and Upsetter, as well as the better-known Slash. But Flipside, produced in Whittier by five school friends, lasted for more than 25 years. After Hudley Flipside joined the team, the fanzine became entwined with her life. She eventually became a co-owner and editor, and continues to maintain the archive, ensuring the presence of the many voices from the scene that persist in the pages. It is through archives like Hudley’s that we are able to invoke the cultural essence of the city as it appeared to hundreds of young people in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
