Place becomes intertwined with subjective spaces of experience and mobility through popular music. To speak or sing “Los Angeles” (a nebulous and unwieldy term) evokes a whole host of feelings, emotions, and affect, as well as abundant mental imagery. This chapter highlights the subjective experience of listening to popular music and how it produces an imaginary that transcends traditional notions of space-time. The music’s sound and textscapes produce—through the subjective listening experience—a mobile imaginary of the city which resists vertical hierarchies. Mapping the music of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and other L.A. bands onto my own experiences with the city will show how fundamental popular music is in the dynamic production of place. However, my own sense of place neglects other L.A. sounds. A materialist subjective reading of recent experiences in Skid Row and at the Super Bowl help us tarry with different conceptions of the city and the influence of race and class on what it means to be an Angelino.
