In Chap. 5 the news values analysis identifies Eliteness, Personalization, Negativity and Positivity construed through news actors/events and the associated evaluation in the Mercedes car quality stories across different platforms and news media. In Chap. 6 the reading positions analysis reveals the ways in which readers establish their position through verbal appraisal resources in the comments following the People’s Daily and Global Times news posts on Weibo on the one hand. The emoji-text relations analysis examines the role and function of emoji played in the co-construal of interpersonal meanings with language in the comments on the other. Now the study of news-reader relations comes to the final step, namely in what ways readers’ evaluative comments overlap or mismatch with particular news values in a story. The comparative study of visual-verbal appraisal resources in the news and comments aims to investigate how commenters react to news values in the two stories of the same topic posted in the official and metropolis news networks on Weibo. First, corpus methods help discern the linguistic patterns of commenters’ appraisal choices targeting specific news actors for construing Eliteness and Personalization. Next, corpus tools are used to detect the differences in language choices for establishing Negativity and Positivity in the news and those used as evaluative responses in the comments. And then, manual examination of emoji and verbal appraisal devices in the comments accounts for the convergent and divergent couplings of evaluation with news actors in response to the corresponding news values promoted in the story.
