Axillary Web Syndrome: Management and Implications for Function

Axillary web syndrome (AWS) is a disorder that develops after breast cancer surgery and is characterized by the presence of palpable or visible cords or fibrotic bands in the axillary region in the affected extremity, chest, or trunk. Management of AWS includes physical therapy, pharmacological treatments, and surgical interventions. Although the most effective treatment strategy for the management of AWS is not clearly defined, physical therapy is considered as the most effective and safe approach for the management of AWS. Exercise and manipulative physical therapy treatments can slow the natural progression of the AWS, restore joint range of motion more rapidly, reduce pain, and improve quality of life. However, more effective treatment protocols will become possible with an increase in studies on the issue and a better understanding of the pathophysiology of AWS. This section aims to provide evidence-based information of treatment approaches used in the management of AWS on the impact the function of individuals with AWS.
