Evolving Digital Data Technologies Towards New GHG Accounting: Digital Inclusion and Transformation

AI is opening up intriguing new possibilities for climate scientists. As the use of AI grows, we’ll ultimately redefine many things we used to take for granted in various domains, and climate action is no exception. So how might power of AI impact the human ability of LCA and consumption-based GHG accounting? Biggest greenhouse gas emitters are not still reporting true climate impact on businesses (Climate Action News, 24 February 2024). Everything is more and more digitalized these days. There is an urgent need for DLT-powered LCA and consumption-based GHG accounting city platform. Very recently, the Korean Government has decided to establish a new “Platform Law” to efficiently and effectively manage the platforms being developed and operated by big tech companies. EU Parliament (2024) approves AI Law regulating technology. The effectiveness and efficiency of digital city climate planning, including LCA and consumption/needs-based GHG emission accounting and reporting will be challenged by complex spatial, physical, cyber, socio-economic and environmental problems, conflicting interests of stakeholders, and citizen activism. Digital city climate planning confronts us with new challenges that ask for innovation solutions. Main purpose of this chapter is to make use of digital technologies to improve city climate planning in general, and GHG accounting and reporting in specific. This chapter describes potential use of digital technologies and offers recommendations for the digitalization of GHG accounting and reporting in the broad context of digital city climate planning discussed in Chap. 5 . Some examples of digital technology application are provided in this chapter.
