Masculinities, Fathering and Migration

This chapter examines the existing literature on masculinities, fatherhood and fathering practices to understand how these ideas and practices are transferred intergenerationally in the context of international migration. It builds on existing critiques of singular ideas of masculinity and suggests a need to go beyond this to consider multiple masculinities. For example, it highlights the importance of examining the emotional aspects of masculinity and fatherhood and explores a range of factors influencing the quality of father-son relationships in the context of international migration. It argues that an intergenerational approach potentially deepens understanding of how masculinities and fathering practices are shaped and reconstructed as part of international migration processes.
