This chapter shares the results of an experimental study that examines the personalization of news and the role that confirmation bias plays regarding perceived journalistic credibility. Results from our nationwide study indicate people who read stories and social media posts from a journalist that reinforces their existing beliefs lead to these participants rating the journalist significantly higher in perceived credibility than the other participants who read stories and social media posts that contradict their beliefs. These results have implications for journalists regarding how they write stories and social media posts and indicate journalists should think carefully when posting their opinions on social media about controversial issues.

摘要

This chapter shares the results of an experimental study that examines the personalization of news and the role that confirmation bias plays regarding perceived journalistic credibility. Results from our nationwide study indicate people who read stories and social media posts from a journalist that reinforces their existing beliefs lead to these participants rating the journalist significantly higher in perceived credibility than the other participants who read stories and social media posts that contradict their beliefs. These results have implications for journalists regarding how they write stories and social media posts and indicate journalists should think carefully when posting their opinions on social media about controversial issues.
