The Tenets of Journalism
摘要
This chapter examines how traditional tenets of journalism can come into conflict with news personalization. Among the journalists we interviewed, the tenet of objectivity was the most highly contested of the traditional tenets. While some felt objectivity was extremely important, others felt it absolutely was not. Those who were pro-objectivity felt it was imperative to make sure audiences receive news and information that is free of the journalist’s opinion because objectivity can help build perceived credibility and trust with the audience. Others felt differently—that including opinions and/or bringing personal experiences into a story can help build relationships with the audience that can result in increased perceived credibility and trust. The citizens in our focus group felt journalistic objectivity is important and made it clear they do not want a journalist’s personal opinions or experiences to be evident in a news story. They said they want just the facts of the story.
