This chapter examines the personalization of news online and how journalists at both traditional and non-traditional news outlets, as well as citizens, view news personalization. Results from interviews show journalists largely equate personalization with being responsive to individual community members’ needs, as well as allowing community members to know and understand who journalists are. News personalization was thought to have both positives and negatives associated with it. While journalists felt creating content that meets individual community members’ needs is important, they worry that it may allow fake news organizations and information to quickly gain traction and lead to a narrowing of perspectives. Citizens in our focus groups said they enjoy personalized news and find it to be more engaging, less overwhelming, and enjoy getting to know journalists better through social media posts about their personal lives. However, many of these citizens were very aware that consuming news that only caters to their viewpoint can be dangerous.
