Drawing on personal experiences while growing up in Manila, Philippines, I share my own stories that manifest colonial mentality in education. It is contextualized with the story of the relationship of the Philippines and United States beginning 1898, illuminating the little-known details that occurred before and during the Philippine-American War. It highlights the legacy and impacts of American colonialism on Philippine education and society. This chapter articulates why colonial mentality remains a problem not only for Philippine education, but for other countries in the Global South as well as marginalized communities in the Global North.
