Neuroprotective Potential of Carotenoids

摘要

Carotenoids are naturally occuring pigments, produced by plants, microalgae, bacteria and fungi. It plays a key role in various physiological functions of living organisms. Carotenoids are particularly useful because of their versatile application from bioactive compounds (supplement, cosmetic) to colouring agents (Food and beverages, Animal and Fish feed). The neuroprotective effects of pigments such as astaxanthins, canthaxanthins, beta-carotene, lutein, and lycopene, are more explored among others. Additionally, it inhibits apoptosis and neuroinflammation, and it has antioxidant, properties. As a result, there is a growing concern regarding the investigation of carotenoid compounds and their potential in alleviating neurodegenerative disease. In this regard, the current chapter provides a detailed description of the various classifications of carotenoids, as well as their physical characteristics, functional capabilities on neurodegenerative disorders, and overall significance to human health. As a result, future researchers will be able to use this information as a springboard into innovative fields of study, such as the role of carotenoids in medicine and the development of cutting-edge agricultural enterprises.
