Theorising Drone Visuals

This chapter revisits the central research question, offering key insights into how drones are transforming our perception of the world and our visual culture. By summarising the book’s discussions, the chapter advances the intersection of digital media, visual communication, and cultural studies. It provides a practical framework for understanding the role of drones in society and their interaction with other technologies, guiding readers in navigating future technological developments. It reflects on the crossroads between mediation and visuality (Kember, S., & Zylinska, J., Life after new media: Mediation as a vital process. MIT Press, 2012) and builds on the empirical analysis of drone visuals, developers’ and users’ perspectives on drones and drone usage, and people’s views on their implementation in society advanced in Chaps. 3 , 4 , and 5 . In its entirety, this book intends to explore the sociocultural implications of the rapid technological advancements that have led to the widespread use of drones, including critical reflections on the opportunities and risks they carry. Ultimately, it seeks to spark an interdisciplinary dialogue on the significance of drone visuals as subjects of further study. With its accompanying visual exhibition (discussed in Chap. 3 ), this research strives to reach a diverse audience, showcasing the potential of drone technologies in capturing and divulging shapes, colours, and patterns that challenge our traditional visual conventions and understanding of the world.
