Development of a Robotic UV-C Device as an Alternative to Chemical Disinfection

COVID-19 generated a pandemic that transformed global dynamics, affecting public health, economies, and daily routines. The SARS-CoV-2 virus mutated, creating variants that complicated disease control, making additional disinfection measures to complement vaccines crucial. This article presents a detailed study on the development of a disinfection robot using ultraviolet light type C (UV-C). The physical principles of disinfection are examined, highlighting its ability to inactivate microorganisms through the destruction of their genetic material. The mechanical design of the robot is described in two main modules: the cart module and the tower module, optimized for stability and efficiency. The electrical and control design of the robot allows for autonomous and efficient operation, minimizing personnel exposure to pathogens and chemicals. Results show the robot’s ability to disinfect large areas in short periods of time, offering an economical and efficient solution for disinfection in a variety of environments.
