SDG 13: A Content Analysis of the WAEC & SSCE Curriculum
摘要
Human existence is under constant threat due to climate change. The United Nations (UN), through Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13, recognises that constant awareness and education can help mitigate climate change. Previous studies have examined climate change knowledge and awareness among students, with less attention paid to including climate change in the secondary school curricula. Therefore, through a content analysis, this chapter examined the inclusion of climate change in the West African Education Council’s Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (WASSCE) curriculum to assess the level of compliance with SDG13. Only two subjects created avenues for learning about climate change out of 85 subjects examined by WASSCE in 2022. The two subjects left out students outside the core sciences. Therefore, West African countries should create educational policies and incentivise the dissemination of information about climate change in secondary schools. Climate change-inclusive educational materials should be deployed at the formative stages.
