Film, Social Media Violence, Governance, and Insecurity in Nigeria
摘要
This chapter explores the affective relationships between film and social media violence, governance, and insecurity in Nigeria within the framework of the 16th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), which aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies. Utilising affect theory and ethnographic analysis, the chapter examines how overt exposure to graphic violence in films and social media desensitises both critical and uncritical audiences to the stimuli of violence and, when coupled with socioeconomic factors arising from bad governance, contributes to the escalation of violence and insecurity in the country. This hampers efforts to establish effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions. The chapter calls for heightened media regulation and improved governance to mitigate these adverse effects, ultimately contributing to the achievement of SDG 16. Recommendations include fostering critical media gate-keeping and encouraging good governance practices to promote peace and security.
