Hyperorchestral Aesthetic Frameworks for the Screen Music Composer

The changes in the screen scoring process that resulted from the introduction of digital technologies are vast. They changed how music was made, how the process integrated within the creation of the audiovisual narrative, and promoted the development of new aesthetic grounds. A sonic approach to music analysis allows to uncover the the musical score’s full potential that is generally hidden when using only a score-based reductionist analysis. At the same time, it allows music to be more relatable to other elements of the audiovisual experience, such as light and color. From this viewpoint, this chapter explores how screen scoring has become a nonlinear process, increasing the capacity to collaborate, communicate, and integrate within the whole filmmaking process. Further, it explores how the unfolding of the full potential of music through sonic transformation and digital technologies allows for more precise and extensive ways to produce meaning through the conceptualization of hyperinstruments and the hyperorchestra.
