Gerard Manley Hopkins’s four years at OxfordOxford, 1863‒67, exposed him to a heady mix of religiosity, spiritual self-examination, and sexual awakening that sensitised and shaped his aestheticAesthetics sense. A star student who gained a rare double first in Classics at Balliol CollegeBalliol College, Oxford, his major extra-academic interest was in the High Church circles around the city. The university was still embroiled in the contentious aftermath of the Oxford MovementOxford Movement, The which, though past its heyday, was still a live presence for scrupulous adolescents who were susceptible to religious atmosphere.
