The main focus of this chapter is to introduce different ways of understanding development and why the concept has been matter of dispute. We discuss the concepts of nature, nurture, and culture while providing an introduction to some recent debates within what today is called the developmental sciences. Some developmental sciences are in part ontologically overlapping theories underpinning posthumanism and new materialism. The developmental sciences are nevertheless critically understood by childhood and early childhood education scholars in terms of normalizing developmentalism. As a counter to developmentalism, postdevelopmentalism has emerged, both in this field that concerns itself with children and within critical economics. The chapter ends by pointing out some of the ontological overlaps between the developmental sciences and postdevelopmentalism.
