Resource recovery is essential for sustainable development and circular economy. Anaerobic digestion (AD) and dark fermentation (DF) are examples used for waste management and energy recovery. However, the obtained biogas yield of these techniques has a strict yield. Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) such as microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) and microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are promising ways to be integrated with these devices for further nutrient and energy recovery. This chapter represents recent advances in the integration of BES with other processes such as DF and AD in addition to discussing the advantages of such processes, current challenges, and perspectives.

摘要
