Introduction

Chapter 1 introduces the pervasiveness of emoji in twenty-first-century society and indicates the scholarly interest that has been afforded to them. Chapter 1 provides a brief overview of key insights on the psychological study of emoji in broad terms and how these help us answer key questions about emoji. Chapter 1 provides a summary of how scholars have studied emoji in respect of emotion, cognition and behaviour to illustrate how these are widely distributed across disciplines, making the synthesis of the literature rather challenging. This chapter concludes with a summary of how each chapter helps the reader navigate the question about how we process emoji through conceptual, theoretical and methodological lenses.
