This review article delves into the critical sector of building energy efficiency, which is pivotal in the global energy consumption scenario, accounting for approximately 28% of worldwide energy use. The focus is on the evolution of building energy performance concepts, regulatory frameworks, and evaluation methodologies. It underscores the transition from passive houses to zero-energy and positive-energy buildings, highlighting the role of HVAC systems as primary energy consumers in buildings. The review also encompasses a detailed bibliographic overview related to the assessment and improvement of building energy consumption, presenting various approaches ranging from purely energy-focused to broader environmental considerations. Furthermore, it examines the criteria for evaluating building energy performance and discusses advanced simulation methods, including dynamic and simplified tools, to predict and enhance building energy efficiency. This comprehensive review aims to provide a holistic understanding of the advancements and challenges in building energy efficiency, emphasizing the need for integrated strategies to mitigate energy consumption and environmental impact.
