Pure line varieties, whose development and commercialisation are a preserve for autogamous crops and often cross-pollinated crops, are almost 100% homozygous at nearly all loci. They are the most common varieties in self-pollinated and often self-pollinated crops except for a few cases where hybrids are also developed and commercialised like sorghum and rice, tomatoes and some high valued vegetables. All conventional breeding methods for self-pollinated crops follow more or less the same breeding pattern involving three major operations, namely, creation of genetic variability, selection and varietal maintenance.
