Changes in gene and genotypic frequencies lead to genetic variation within populations and among populations. Individuals within a population are different among themselves because of different alleles they carry at different loci and populations also differ among themselves because of variation in alleles and allele frequencies they have at different loci. Some alleles may be specific and characteristic of certain populations. Genetic variation may be easily detected for some characters while it may not be that obvious for other characters.
