In crop improvement programs some plant breeding challenges and production problems are resolved by mobilisation of genetic variability that exists in the species related to the crops necessitating interspecific or intergeneric crosses between the crops and their wild and weedy relatives. Hybridisations between cultivated plants and their relatives give the plant breeders opportunities to mobilise variability in alien gene pools and broaden genetic variability and diversity of cultivated plants and transfer one or a few distinct genes from wild or weedy species not available in the respective crop species.
