Violence changes everything. When it becomes part of everyday life, as it did in many parts of Europe in the 1940s, violence is transformative. It transforms the social environment and social relations. It transforms people. The violence that existed in wider society, and its relationship to the state, were factors of critical importance to the scale and character of paramilitarism.
