Hepatic artery pump placement via laparotomy is now widely used in the treatment of colorectal liver metastases and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. Successful pump placement depends on thorough knowledge of arterial variants of the hepatic artery system and careful surgical technique. Here, we discuss the relevant anatomic and technical details for pump insertion. In addition, the management of a variety of potential pitfalls is outlined.
