This chapter examines the intersection of survival, resistance and social control experienced by the Kalunga community, one of Brazil’s most significant quilombos. It critically analyses land disputes, education and their implications under Article 68 of Brazil’s 1988 Constitution. Although framed as reparative justice, this legal provision perpetuates systemic inequalities. Through the lens of criminological theories, this chapter questions how policies aimed at historical redress often reinforce exclusion and marginalisation.
