Selection Criteria in Party Leadership Elections Revisited

This chapter summarizes the main findings of the study and explores the key features of the examined multi-candidate leadership election taking place under the open primary method in Greece by three major parties of government from 2007 to 2023: the centre-left PASOK, the centre-right ND and the radical left SYRIZA. It summarizes the explanations of the election outcomes from a Stark model perspective of the three ordered selection criteria. In addition, it compares the main findings by highlighting similarities and differences regarding the selection criteria that prevailed as well as the political conditions that defined the outcome. Last section outlines and evaluates the contributions of the study to the relevant academic literature.
