Selection Criteria in Party Leadership Elections of SYRIZA (2023)

This chapter describes the political background in which SYRIZA held its first multi-candidate open primary leadership contest in 2023. It examines the electoral context with a main focus on the candidates’ campaign strategies for the leadership post. In addition, it analyses in depth the voting behaviour of party selectors against the three ordered selection criteria of the Stark model using polling data as well as qualitative insights from interviews with candidates, their closest aides and senior party officials.
