This chapter comprehensively explores the intricate immunological defense mechanisms in the respiratory system. We delve into the orchestrated interplay of innate and adaptive immunity to counteract airborne pathogens, pollutants, allergens, etc. Key elements such as mucosal immunological defenses, lung mucosa-resident immune cells (i.e., macrophages, dendritic cells, plasma cells, innate lymphoid cells (ILC), natural killer (NK) cells, and T lymphocytes), and humoral responses are described in detail.
