Dyadic Treatment in the Context of Medical Concerns

Medical conditions—acute or chronic—and injury affect romantic and family relationships in myriad ways, yet these relationships are critical protective factors that shield against the development of psychopathology amidst stress. We first describe the biopsychosocial model in relation to patients dealing with medical illness and injury and review prior research showing social support as an influential protective factor against psychopathology in this population. We highlight the importance of family member involvement in cognitive behavioral interventions as an approach to improving psychological and medical outcomes. Subsequently, Promotion of Emotional Disclosure—a brief dyadic intervention—is described in detail including a review of the protocol, recommendations for implementation within healthcare settings, and potential cultural adaptations followed by a case vignette.
