The Gamelan Selonding as a Communication Media for Ancient Balinese Culture

The aim of this research is to reveal the cultural communication media in gamelan selonding. As an ancient Balinese cultural heritage, gamelan selonding is often used by old men for sacred arts activities in temples. But now, many teenagers in Bali are proud to use gamelan selonding as a medium of communication for ancient Balinese culture. The problems are: 1) What are the forms of communication activities of Balinese teenagers who use gamelan selonding?; 2) What is the communication meaning of gamelan selonding for Balinese teenagers?. This research was completed using qualitative methods. All primary data has been collected using interview and observation techniques in Bali. All secondary data was obtained based on a literature study. The total data has been analysed qualitatively using symbolic interaction theory, symbol theory and communicative action theory. The results show: 1). The form of communication between Balinese teenagers who use gamelan selonding is unidirectional in order to build prestige and a romantic atmosphere, as well as provide information to the Balinese people about wedding ceremonies, piodalan and important cultural events; 2) The communication meaning of gamelan selonding for Balinese teenagers is a sign of social events, prestige and communication media for ancient Balinese culture.
