Industry Perspective: As an important leader in artist run initiatives, this perspective is adapted from Channon Goodwin’s submission to the Australian Fair Work Commission’s Modern Awards Review 2023–24 and as a digital article for NAVA in 2024. Here, Goodwin reflects on his own journey from artist to arts worker, finding himself mid-career with “no savings and very little superannuation”. He argues that change is needed to improve working conditions in the visual arts sector, sharing both his hopes and fears for newer generations entering an industry where artists “speculate heavily on their own careers with little-to-no possibility of economic reward”.
