This paper introduces the notion of “pivotal assets” to describe the role of cloud infrastructures as a central, shared resource that enables value creation across the digital landscape. Through our analysis, we explore how cloud infrastructures, with their broad array of complementary digital technologies, support, enhance, and help build new digital services. We describe how digital incumbents have facilitated the emergence of cloud infrastructures of supermodular complementarities—synergies that yield value greater than the sum of their parts—through the strategic release of open technologies. These technologies range from open-source software to pre-trained machine learning algorithms and open hardware designs, all available under permissive licensing terms. This strategy has created momentum within the cloud and AI/machine learning ecosystem resulting in generative outcomes through the exploitation of supermodular complementarities.
