The increase in the menace of environmental plastic pollution caused by the huge accumulation of plastic waste in the environment can be attributed to the increase in the production, consumption and poor disposal of plastics compounded with increase in international trade on plastics and especially plastic waste. Developing countries who are the major importers of plastic waste are unable to dispose of them properly due poor infrastructure and unstrict environmental regulation unlike the developed countries who are the major exporters of these waste. Therefore, the global plastic economy is dependent on international trade. Regulation of complete life cycle of plastics by international corporation and strict international trade policy by various countries of the world as highlighted in this review is very crucial in order to achieve a sustainable plastic management to address global plastic pollution.
